4th of July from the Air
A friend of mine has a small airplane and offered to take us up to watch 4th of July fireworks from the air. Its a small 4-seater Cessna and luckily I was able to claim one of the seats for the night.
How did you spend your 4th of July? There are still some events going on around the metro if you’re looking for something to do for the holiday weekend. Check wimgo.com/july4th for more details.

Eischen’s Bar

I was finally let in on an Oklahoma secret yesterday - Eischen’s Bar in Okarche.
It was my first time to make the 30-45 min drive from the metro, but it was well worth it. A few of us went out after work and ordered the famous fried chicken and a couple sides of fried okra. They only have a couple items on the menu, so it isn’t hard to make a decision about what to order.
Supposedly its the oldest bar in Oklahoma - opening in something like 1896. The chicken was brought to the table in paper baskets and they give everyone a handful of waxpaper instead of plates. A couple of us also brought in plastic forks because apparently there is a silverware shortage in Okarche, or at least at Eischen’s.
Make sure and bring cash or check because they don’t accept credit/debit cards.
Renegade Picture Show
A friend of mine told me about the guys with Renegade Picture Show. Basically, its a group of people and a traveling drive-in movie.
Their website describes what their doing as “an impromptu drive-up drive-in.” Everyone meets up at a designated location, a video projector is setup to show a movie on the side of a building, wall, or other structure and everyone listens to the audio by tuning to it with their car radio.
Renegade Picture Show started out in Norman, but has since made its home base at Rocktown Climbing Gym in OKC. The best part is that the movie is free. They do accept donations, but more than anything they are just interested in showing films in a unique setting and in a unique way.
I missed the screening of Blazing Saddles on June 28th, but they are screening Jaws on July 19th.

Jazz in June
I made it out to Jazz in June yesterday for blues night. A couple of the board members told me over 8,000 people were on hand in the Brookhaven Village parking lot Thursday for the free concert. They are expecting almost 10,000 people Friday and possibly 30,000 at Andrews Park for headlining act Chuck Mangione.
Jazz in June
Growing up, I spent a good deal of my time in Norman and one of the best parts of the summer was heading out to Jazz in June. None of my friends were old enough for a car just yet, so one of our parents would drop us off at Brookhaven Village off 36th & W. Robinson in Norman and we’d go back and forth between the music, the French bakery, and then the Mazzio’s Pizza at the end of the night where we’d have to use the pay phone to call for a ride home.
Its been several years since I was at the annual concert series, but I’m planning to head out to Jazz in June this coming weekend (and no, I don’t have to call my parents to get a ride to Norman).

free wifi around town
I’m in Norman again for a video shoot on the OU campus. I got here early so I’m catching up on some work here at the Starbucks off Campus Corner.

Like anyone else who does a majority of their work on a laptop, coming across a free wifi spot is like finding gold. Now and then I’ll do some of my video editing at coffee shops around town and use their wireless internet. More often than not, I try to avoid Starbucks because of their contract with T-Mobile. Luckily, this Starbucks can access the free wireless network that OU has set up on their campus.
That being said, I’m told that Starbucks is dropping their relationship with T-Mobile and switching to AT&T wifi. I’m still not exactly sure about the details and the fees (if there are any at all) that go along with the AT&T wifi use, but still… This looks like a good thing.
Anyone else know of other free wifi spots around the OKC metro area? Tell us about it in the comment section.
Drop by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum
Ron Bradshaw, Dick and Patsy Lowry, Hunt Lowry and Martha Bradshaw checked out the artwork at the Prix de West art exhbition and sale this week-end. (Photo by Helen Ford Wallace.)
Drop by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum for a look at the Prix de West Exhibition. It was one of the best shows ever. Somehow, this year, all the paintings and sculptures are displayed to the best advantage.
This year’s Prix de West winner Morgan Weistling’s painting is excellent. Called “Indian Stories, ” it shows a grandfather relating timeless stories to his wife and grandchildren. The exhibit is up until September.
deadCENTER Film Festival - day 2

I left with a few friends to head out to catch the Whimsical Shorts at the IAO Gallery off 8th & Broadway downtown. We got there late so we weren’t able to see all of the short films, but our favorite one was A Faery’s Tale by Sylvia Apostol. It was a film about a tooth fairy who runs into a little girl with a collection of her own.
After leaving IAO, we left for a packed Kerr Auditorium and The Stanton Family Grave Robbery. It was a story about three brothers whose father dies and is buried in Texas by their stepmother. The two older brothers kidnap the youngest and dig up their father to honor his wish of being buried in Oklahoma.
I loved it.
deadCENTER Film Festival - day 1

After the party, the film Rainbow Around the Sun made it’s long awaited Oklahoma debut. Even though the wind gave them some problems initially, a huge screen and sound system were set up for an outdoor screening. If you missed it tonight, there is another screening - check wimgo.com for details on the Friday night screening. I talked with the guys earlier and they told me about how their film had already played at SXSW and the Florida Film Festival.
Canvas Art Show
So the Canvas Art Show was this past Friday night and I had a blast. After talking with some of the guys responsible for the show, they said they had a great turn out. Something like 1,400 people were there for the event.
If you weren’t there, you missed out on the customized Van’s, food from different restaurants around town, and local break dancers and DJ’s.
